        Torch Chaplaincy Listening Service

Support as you adjust to life with sight loss

Torch Chaplaincy is able to offer emotional and spiritual support over the phone to anyone (over 18) who is losing their sight, and experiencing the life-changing impact of this. It is particularly for those who are new to sight loss, or those who are struggling to adjust to a time of difficulty as a result of a deterioration in sight or a change in circumstances.

We know that sight loss can be devastating and that it can take time to come to terms with what is happening and to find ways of being able to look at the future more positively. Our small team of Christian volunteer listeners can offer those losing their sight a listening ear and someone to talk to about the things that matter to them. We hope that having someone to talk to about any concerns, difficulties or anxieties – however big or small – will make a significant difference and provide some wellbeing support. Each chaplaincy listener will have an understanding of issues faced by individuals with sight loss, and most will also have personal experience of sight loss.

Those referred to the service will be able to choose to have a one-off conversation over the phone with one of the ‘sight loss friendly’ listeners, or arrange to have a short series of calls depending on what’s going on for them at the time.

We recognise that there can often be a spiritual impact for those losing their sight so the volunteer listeners are available to offer spiritual support if and when requested, however Torch Chaplaincy seeks to offer  wellbeing support to all who are adjusting to sight loss regardless of religious affiliation, and there is no expectation that people have a Christian faith.

A Chaplaincy Team Listener will be able to:

        • offer a friendly and supportive telephone call
        • provide wellbeing support through confidential, non-judgemental listening
        • offer relevant advice, and signposting to other avenues of support when appropriate
        • talk about matters of faith and offer spiritual support if and when requested
