Quietly situated in the Sussex village of Hurstpierpoint with views of the South Downs, the Torch Holiday & Retreat Centre is the ideal setting in which to refresh mind, body and spirit. Scenic countryside walks start from the garden gate. The historic village is full of character and has good local shops. The seaside town of Brighton is just nine miles away.
To better serve all our guests – especially those with disabilities – Torch HRC has been refurbished throughout to upgrade facilities. The large new south-facing terrace enjoys great countryside views and gives access to the well-kept gardens via stairs and a shallow ramp. A new main staircase has been positioned to allow corridors to be widened and straightened, creating a more spacious feel to the house. New decoration uses attractive high contrast colour schemes to help partially sighted guests get around independently. Central to the house is a large lounge with a grand piano. A loop system is fitted for the benefit of hearing aid users. Attached to the house is a beautiful and peaceful chapel dating from early last century, which is used for private or group prayer and worship.
The house offers double, single and twin bedded rooms as well as a couple of family rooms. All rooms have washing facilities and are comfortably furnished. We have four ground floor rooms with priority given to those unable to manage stairs. We regret we are unable to administer medicines or provide nursing care but if you need extra help you are welcome to bring a carer with you.
Torch HRC has a reputation for delicious meals! Full board is provided, including early morning tea brought to your room, breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper and all refreshments. Catering for special diets is possible by prior arrangement.
The heart of Torch holidays is fellowship – being together – and each day there is some spiritual content to the programme as well as time to relax in the warm family atmosphere.
Outings are arranged during the spring and summer months to places of interest – such as National Trust properties and other country gardens, animal farms, the coast and shopping centres. For the more agile there are other options: bowling, boat trips, abseiling, swimming and walking. The evening programme varies from theatre trips to games evenings, fellowship times to talent shows. Transport for outings is provided in our own minibus.
The programme includes a growing variety of themed weeks and breaks to cater for all tastes: activity weeks, computer training weekends, walking holidays, health and home weeks and Bible study weeks as well as our Christmas, Easter and summer house parties.
Torch Holiday and Retreat Centre is managed by Gail Millar with a team of staff and volunteers. Gail lives on site with her husband Stuart and her three children – Emma, Philip and Sarah. You are assured of a very warm welcome.
