Torch HRC terrace view

To better serve all our guests - especially those with disabilities - Torch HRC has been refurbished throughout. On the ground floor is a fully accessible en-suite bedroom with a direct access to a new terrace. A further fully accessible shower room is available to all visitors.

The large new south-facing terrace enjoys great views of the South Downs and gives access to the garden via stairs and a shallow ramp.

New decorations use attractive high contrast colour schemes to help partially sighted guests get around independently.

Quietly situated in the Sussex village of Hurstpierpoint with views of the South Downs, the Torch Holiday & Retreat Centre is the ideal setting in which to refresh mind, body and spirit. Scenic countryside walks start from the garden gate. The historic village is full of character and has local shops. The seaside town of Brighton is just nine miles awayLady reading at a Houseparty.

Torch holidays are centred in fellowship – being together – and each day there is some Christian spiritual content to the programme.

The Centre is operated by the Torch Trust for the Blind which provides Christian literature, fellowship and personal support for blind and partially sighted people.

Torch Holiday and Retreat Centre is managed by Gail Millar with a team of staff and volunteers. Gail lives on site with her three children Emma, Philip and Sarah. You can be assured of a very warm welcome.

At the heart of the house is a large lounge with a grand piano. A loop system is fitted for the benefit of hearing aid users. The sun lounge which faces south leads to well-kept gardens where you can sit and relax. Attached to the house is a beautiful peaceful chapel which dates from early last century. This is available for private or corporate prayer and worship.

Playing tactile dominoesThe house offers double, single and twin bedded rooms as well as a couple of family rooms. All rooms have washing facilities and are comfortably furnished. We have four ground floor rooms with priority given to those unable to manage the stairs. Accessible facilities are available for disabled guests. We regret we are unable to administer medicines or provide nursing care but if you need extra help you are welcome to bring a carer with you.

Delicious meals mean that you will never go hungry. Full board is provided including early morning tea brought to your room, breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper and all refreshments. Catering for special diets is possible by prior arrangement.

Outings and activities are arranged during the spring and summer months to places of interest e.g. National Trust and other country gardens, animal farms and places of interest, the coast, and shopping centres. For the more agile there are other options: bowling, boat trips, abseiling, swimming and walking. The evening programme varies from theatre trips to games evenings, fellowship times to talent shows. Transport for outings is provided in our own mini-bus.

Lady at a bowling alleyWe have a growing variety of themed weeks and breaks to cover all tastes: activity weeks, computer training weekends, walking holidays, health and home weeks, Bible study weeks as well as our Christmas, Easter and Summer houseparties.

The Torch Holiday & Retreat Centre aims to provide a relaxing holiday, sharing God’s love and encouraging spiritual refreshment in a Christian family environment.
