TLM - ISSUE 3 2008

Editorial

A librarian's best friend!

I'd like to tell you about a very good friend of mine. In fact she's one of my best friends! And I can say with confidence I'm one of her best friends too! She never misses an opportunity to let me know how much she values our friendship.

Every time I meet her she greets me with the same enthusiasm. She's never cross with me and she never gets offended! I tell you her friendship is a real treasure. When I walk into her room she'll immediately start making a bang - bang noise on the floor with her ... well, with her tail ... yes, as you might have guessed by now my friend is not a human being but a dog - a guide dog!

Her name is Mist. And she's not my only canine friend. There's Penny and Shannie and others. And I love them all to bits. They have got a bed under my desk which they all like very much. Sometimes their owners ask me if I can look after them for a while and of course I always say "yes"! So they've got used to living under my desk now and again.

They all love going out for walks in the field near Torch House, and I try to take them out as often as I can. I'm usually quite busy working in the library in the morning, so its quite nice when lunchtime comes and I can let off steam and go for a run with the doggies in the field! I think they would definitely agree that it's a very good idea!

So this is what my life looks like at work - and I must say I do enjoy it! I'm sure many of you are almost as mad about dogs as I am, so if you like them, may I suggest a few doggy titles that you might like to borrow? Here is.................to tell you what we have available...

In the devotional category we have:

The Gospel According to Brodie by Jennifer-Rees Larcombe. In a series of amusing, touching and poignant letters to a disabled friend, Jennifer reflects on the lessons of faith she has learned from Brodie, her dog who was born blind. Available on cassette, on DAISY, in braille and in giant print.

The Parables of Harris by Peter Horrobin. The true story of Harris, a black Labrador with character, and how his adventures and humorous exploits have become modern-day parables providing important insights into life. Available on cassette, in braille and in giant print.

Lessons from A Sheepdog by Phillip W Keller. Through the captivating story of his experience with "Lass", beloved border collie, Phillip Keller shows that only as Christians submit to the loving discipline of the Shepherd do they become responsive to his love and discover fulfilment. Available on cassette, on DAISY and in braille.

Four Paws from Heaven by M R Wells. These delightful devotions will make you smile and perhaps grow a little misty as you enjoy true stories of how God watches over and provides for us even as we care for our canine companions. Available on cassette, in braille, and in giant print.

If you like biographies, then we recommend:

Blind Courage by Bill Irwin. In a remarkable story of commitment, perseverance, and the will to survive, Blind Courage tells of the first blind person to hike the beautiful but treacherous Appalachian Trail in the USA, with his faithful dog and companion, Orient. Available on cassette and in braille.

Find The Way by Mike Endicott. This book is about a most amazing guide dog called Yates. His happy owner is Mike Endicott, a church minister who recounts many hilarious occasions in his everyday life with Yates, as well as some more thought-provoking ones, each a little story in itself. Available on cassette, in braille, and in giant print.

Trust Yates! by Mike Endicott. Another title by the same author. In this book, Mike tells of some of the profound truths he has learnt during his time with Yates. Available in giant print, (and DAISY talking book from RNIB).

And for those of you who like reading children's fiction we can offer the following titles:

All Alone (Except for My Dog Friday) by Claire Blatchford. The story of a girl called Margaret who is sure nobody understands what it's like to be deaf. Not her parents. Not her friends at school. Not even her brother Frank. No one - except a lovable stray sheep-dog named Friday. But what if the owners claim Friday and take him away? Margaret wonders. Will she be alone again? Available on cassette.

Lassie The Guide Dog by Stella G Heath. A collection of short stories of Ann and her guide dog and the lessons we can learn about the Christian life. Available in giant print.

Loompy - Mission Dog by Sheila Groves. This is the story of Loompy - a not very elegant, smallish, brownish and fattish sort of dog. A kind of mission dog, who lives in Singapore with Uncle Joachim and Auntie Annemarie and lots of children. This story is about one terrible thunderstorm when Loompy gets lost. Available on cassette.

Nobody's Dog by Eleanor Watkins. Luke cannot forget the lonely dog with its hungry brown eyes. It seems to be somebody's dog, so Luke and his friend Mr Bronzovi decide to look after it. But it is not as easy as Luke thinks. Available on cassette and in braille.

Who's Who?

Heather Williams

Librarian and Torch Trustee

Born in Sheffield in 1935, I was then whisked away at the age of three by my mother when she and my father separated. We went to live with my grandparents in Norfolk. This was at the start of the war, and despite shells exploding, tank traps on the beach, and the occasional bomb being dropped from planes unloading as they sped back to Germany, I spent a very happy childhood in the country and by the sea. My grandmother was a Christian and took me to a little village Methodist chapel.

When I left school at 18 I left all that behind and joined the WRNS as a Sick Berth Attendant, and after training at Chatham Naval Hospital for a year, went to work in Naval Sick Bays. The neighbours had warned my mother that I would return drinking gin and smoking! Actually the complete opposite happened, I became a Christian!

I was at a Naval air station near Gosport, Hants, and was invited to a "Mission to Britain" gospel meeting held by Tom Rees of Hildenborough Hall - father of Jennifer Rees-Larcombe. I realised for the first time that I wasn't a Christian and needed to get off the fence and surrender my life to Jesus Christ, which I did in the hymn, "Just as I am". It says "tho' tossed about with many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within without, O Lamb of God I come, I come". I was baptised in Northend Baptist Church in Portsmouth. What a difference it made to be born again!

During that time our fellowship went regularly to take services in a nearby Home for the Blind and I started going along to read and write letters for people there. Completing my 8 years in the WRNS I went to work for the RNIB in a Rehabilitation Centre for newly blind people in Shropshire. What a mission field! People came for a 13-week course to learn mobility, braille, typing, housewifery, handicrafts etc. Another Christian worked there and we began holding Bible studies and took people out to churches and a Saturday fellowship meeting. If anyone wanted Christian literature we contacted the Torch Trust to help them grow in the Christian faith and find fellowship when they returned home.

In 1971 we moved to a purpose built centre in Nottingham. We went to the Torch Fellowship Group there and also to Hallaton for the Torch Open Days. However, the monetary axe fell and the rehab centre was closed after 10 years, which was a great blow, having such a wonderful team and seeing so many people helped. It was a very distressing time after 20 years of service!

Then the Lord opened up another door when a friend suggested that Torch always needed staff! I gave up my flat and moved once more into residential work as Housekeeper at Torch House; a forty-bedroomed old house with several blind residents and staff who worked and lived there, many houseparties, and loads of visitors.

After 9 years I was due to retire, but was asked to take on work in the cassette library and recording the Bible passages for Every Day with Jesus which I did, and have loved the work ever since. Then we moved to a new purpose built centre in Market Harborough, which is all high-tech and non-residential. Everyone had to be re-housed and I went to live with Daphne Johnson nearby.

We are now in our fourth year in a lovely new building - all departments networked together with the computer system and going from strength to strength in the Lord's work. "Amazing", as Mr Heath often used to say (he and Mrs Heath were the founders of the Torch Trust). It is a miracle of God's grace as I look back over the years and long that I might continue to be fruitful in His service for His glory.

The Penny

Back to Contents

by Joyce Meyer

(Reviewed by Bridget Naylor)

A Penny! What's it worth? Nothing at all in today's money, and even in 1955 when this novel begins, a penny couldn't really buy much or achieve much.

Yet when Jenny, (the central character) of this novel, stooped to reach down to the pavement to pick up the penny she saw lying there, it set off a chain of events that accomplished so much, both in her own life and in the lives of others.

Maybe you feel as if your life isn't worth much and can't have any impact or influence on other people for good. If so, read on and discover how God used an insignificant penny to start a roller coaster ride full of adventures.

This novel engages you straightaway and keeps your interest right through till the end, with several twists and turns. Jenny is 14 years old and had suffered abuse from her father, and although the details are not graphically portrayed, they are related in such a way that you can feel the emotions she went through and struggled with. But she was not content to stay like that and made the most of every opportunity that came her way to break free from the chain of events in her past.

The development of the other characters was very uplifting as well and the Bible verse, "God meant it for good", comes to mind, as events unfold from seeming tragedy to changed lives and attitudes. Each of their lives has an impact on Jenny, and their characters have a lot to teach us about God's ways in dealing with difficult situations in our lives. In fact, there are questions at the back of the book that help you to probe further into the book's message.

Miss Shaw is one of those characters who starts off as very mysterious and no one really knows the real "her".

Do you wear your white Sunday gloves all the time because you're afraid to touch anything? That's what I'd heard Mama say she'd really like to find out about Miss Shaw.

But as her character unfolds you find out about her past and how she dealt with it, and so was able to help Jenny with her past.

You know what I think? I think your picking up that penny was more than part of a random chain of events. I think God was giving you a message. I think he wants you to know that he's watching over you all the time, that he has a good plan for your life.

Although this book is a novel, it was inspired by Joyce's own childhood, so any fans of Joyce Meyer's books on teaching will be interested to get the general idea of her childhood and events that have shaped her life and enabled her to write her teaching books with such genuine feeling and emotion borne out of experience.

But also, it will appeal to people who enjoy reading novels and want to be uplifted and encouraged. Each time you put the book down you will be encouraged in how God's ways are past finding out and are indeed marvellous, and each time you pick the book up to read a bit more you will be eagerly wondering what will happen next, and do the characters let events flatten them, or do they rise above them.

The main theme of the book then, is that no matter what happens to us in our lives we have a choice in how we react and that if we allow God into our circumstances then He can change the outcome into something very positive that can have far reaching effects both in our own lives and in those we come into contact with.

I knew I couldn't ever forgive Daddy on my own. That was something possible only by the grace of God. But I'd also learned God never tells us to do something without giving us the means to do it.

God strengthened me so that Daddy's awful choices ended with him, and didn't go farther. That was God's victory in my life.

by Dennis Bennett

Reviewed by James Brookman

This book is probably the greatest classic missing from Torch's audio library. For some reason it disappeared from the library but now 37 years after it was published it has been freshly transcribed and is back!

I remember this book with its distinctive cover, a stylised sun against a bright blue background, from my childhood in the seventies so I was looking forward to finally getting round to reading it. I guessed from the book title's oblique reference to Acts 2:I5 that it was charismatic but I had no idea how mainstream and understated it would be.

The author, Dennis Bennett, who became essentially responsible for starting the charismatic renewal movement in America in the sixties was a very high Episcopalian minister known to his congregation by the very uncharismatic title of "Father Bennett". Let's join the book early on as Frank, a neighbouring minister, comes to Dennis complaining about a couple in his own church who have suddenly started attending every service and sit there with silly grins on their faces.

... the thing that bothers me most is that when I asked one of them how come they turn up all the time and look so happy, they said, "We've been baptised in the Holy Spirit!"

"They've been what in the what?" I asked.

"That's about what I said when I first heard it," Frank went on. "But stranger yet, they also claim to have "spoken in tongues", whatever that is."

"Oh," I said, "now I'm beginning to understand what's bothering you; but why be so worried about it? There are plenty of mixed up people in the world. Expect one or two to show up in your backyard now and then. Why don't you ask them to settle down, or leave?"

Well as it turns out Dennis isn't able to take his own advice and he too becomes intrigued by this couple. Pretty soon he is himself baptised in the Holy Spirit and starts not only walking round with a silly grin on his face but finding he has new power in his prayer life and a new desire to worship God. This is when his problems start. He tries desperately to keep it from his congregation but they are suspicious something is going on because people are getting healed and their chain-smoking minister has stopped smoking. He is forced to explain himself and feels obliged to resign from the church.

Fortunately Dennis' bishop can't find anything heretical in his ministry and assigns him to a new church, St Luke's, which is in a less desirable neighbourhood. Here are a couple of extracts from his early days at St Luke's (in the audio version they are read by Ralph Bennett, who whimsically explains in the introduction that he is not related to the author):

"The Lord seems to want me to say this," she began, seating herself across the room. "You are afraid. You are afraid that this church will blow up like the church in Van Nuys! But don't be afraid. You'll never have any trouble here that you can't handle, and you'll have strong support from the top down!"

As she spoke, I could have no doubt whatever that the Lord was using her as His messenger on that day. She could not possibly have known how much those words were true, and were needed. I had indeed been living with fear much of the time since the explosion in Van Nuys. I had not realised how oppressed I was until suddenly the oppression was broken. It seemed that I could feel the hot wind of the Holy Spirit blowing in my face, and that a silver rain of joy was visibly coming down from heaven! My heart began to leap with joy - I laughed, I shouted, I praised God! I am afraid I startled the newly-baptised-in-the-Holy-Spirit Christian whom God had used as His emissary.

With this kind of assurance from the Holy Spirit, I plunged into the new work with enthusiasm. "The most important thing is to get started visiting people," I had said to Florence, the church secretary who had been heroically holding things together at St. Luke's while they were without a minister. "I'm going to divide the community into areas, and appoint a 'key family' over each area. We've got to get organised!"

In the very first St Luke's newsletter after our arrival, I was all set to get "churchy".

"Just as soon as we are settled and moved in, I intend to begin an intensive round of visiting," I had written. Brave words! I thought I knew what to do about St Luke's. I had revived a couple of other dead little churches in my time, and calling or visiting was basic. Ministers are trained to pay calls on people, in the hopes that people will come and "pay a call" on God! But clearly, God had other ideas. He was going to revive this church. St Luke's was going to be different; it wasn't going to be a group of dependent souls being "taken care of" by a minister. These people were going to be equipped to help each other, and those around them, too. I was never permitted to carry out my "calling program". God did allow me to care for the people who were in real need - sick or in trouble - but He never let me organise a round of home visiting for public relations purposes.

I have often been told: "The reason for the revival at St Luke's Church is that you are a clever organiser who knows just how to go about the business of building up a congregation!" The fact is that my "cleverness", if any, was not allowed to be used. All the little tricks of the trade that I had acquired in sixteen years of ministry were never put to use, because God kept me too busy to use them!

*****

"Guess what happened last night?" Amy's face was positively shining with joy. "We had some old friends over to our house and they accepted Jesus!"

I would hardly have known it was the same person that I had spotted in the congregation one Sunday morning shortly after my arrival in Seattle.

Good heavens, that woman looks depressed! I had thought. I learned that the woman's name was Amy, and that she had a husband, Ed, who occasionally came to church - when he wasn't fishing! Somewhat to my surprise, Amy had stopped me after church one fine Sunday morning:

"I hear you are having some prayer meetings in people's homes," she said. "Why don't you come and have one in ours?" Accordingly, several evenings later we did. As people were assembling, Amy said:

"I have a bad sore throat. Would you pray for me, Father Bennett?" Calling a man to help who had already been remarkably used in praying for the sick, we laid hands on Amy's head and the soreness immediately left her throat. But that wasn't all! The Lord also baptised her in the Holy Spirit, and she began to speak in tongues!

How things changed for that couple! When Ed saw what happened to Amy, he said:

"I want that, too!" We prayed for him. He had a hard time beginning to speak in tongues, because he was a bit shy and inhibited. Obviously, the Holy Spirit was at work in him, and as at so many other times I was tempted to say:

"Oh, well, that's all right. Never mind about the 'tongues'. They'll probably come later." But God again made Himself clear on the subject. It wasn't long before Ed reported:

"I'm beginning to speak in tongues in my dreams at night!" After that, it was just a matter of time until he was speaking fluently in his waking hours, and at will. (Since then we have known of many cases in which "speaking in tongues" came first in a dream.) Once again I had opportunity to see how completely the blessing of Pentecost could change two people. Both Ed and Amy had "church" backgrounds. Ed had given up on expecting anything important to happen at "church". Amy was hanging on, as women in a family often do. When Ed saw his wife healed and suddenly brought to a glowing life in the Holy Spirit, he immediately wanted to share in something so obviously good.

Now instead of Amy being in church looking bored, with Ed away fishing, Amy and Ed were in church not only every Sunday, but several times on Sunday, and also at meetings several times during the week. They had "come alive" in the Spirit.

They said: "You know, before we were baptised in the Holy Spirit our only concern was to get through the weekend! We would have some friends over for a visit, but it was usually pretty dull. A few drinks would help to liven things up, but not much. Now we get our friends over and tell them about Jesus! It's much more exciting."

I could gladly fill the rest of this library Magazine with stories and quotes from the book but it's probably more helpful to just recommend you get the book out and enjoy them for yourself.
