Torch Centre Chapel

About Torch's Centenary Chapel

The Torch Holiday & Retreat Centre has a wonderful, peaceful, atmospheric chapel.

Just over 100 years ago, on 17th April 1913, the beautiful chapel at Torch Holiday & Retreat Centre was opened by Princess Alexandra and consecrated by the Bishop of Chichester. For about half its life – since 1968 – it has been in the ownership of Torch and used frequently for worship and prayers and much else, even for banquets during our Christmas houseparties.

How amazing that God led Torch Trust founders Ron and Stella Heath to this property as Torch’s first. Though the house is really just a much-extended Sussex cottage it has a chapel of which a major stately home would be proud.

This chapel holds numerous precious memories for many people associated with Torch. Among them are moving times of worship and significant moments of personal prayer in its quietness - and a number of marriages and marriage blessings have been celebrated here, and several services of thanksgiving.

It’s not just to Torch people that the chapel is so special. The chart topping Christian song, ‘Bless the Lord, O my soul’ – often referred to as: ‘10,000 reasons’ – by Matt Redman and Jonas Myrin was written in our chapel. Back in the chapel just a few weeks ago with Jonas and writing new songs, Matt commented, ‘This is a special place – I’ve written songs here for ten years’.
